Pheniramine

Uses of Pheniramine

  • Pheniramine is an antihistamine medication and is used to manage allergic reactions such as hay fever, urticaria (hives), angioedema, allergic conjunctivitis, allergic rhinitis, and allergic skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis.

  • It can also be used to alleviate symptoms associated with the common cold, motion sickness, Meniere's disease, such as vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss.

Side effects of Pheniramine

  • Drowsiness

  • Dry mouth, nose, and throat

  • Dizziness

  • Headache

  • Nausea and vomiting

How Pheniramine works

  • Pheniramine is an antihistamine medicine.

  • It works by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical that your body releases during an allergic reaction. When you come in contact with an allergen, like pollen or pet fur, your body produces histamine. This causes inflammation, itching, and increased mucus production. By blocking the action of histamine, Pheniramine reduces these symptoms and provides relief from allergic reactions.

Expert Advice

Dosage Forms Available:

  • Pheniramine is available in several different forms. It can be taken orally (tablets and syrup) and intravenously (injection).

Age and Dose Restrictions:

  • Typically, Pheniramine is prescribed for adults and children over the age of 2 years. It is not recommended for use in children under 2 years without first consulting a paediatrician.

  • The dosage of Pheniramine will depend on various factors such as your age, weight, and overall health condition. Follow your doctor's instructions or the directions on the product label.

Contraindications:

  • You should not take this medication if you have a known allergy to Pheniramine. This medicine should be avoided by those with severe liver or kidney disease and those suffering from narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, or peptic ulcer disease.

Other Medications to Avoid:

  • Pheniramine may interact with central nervous system depressants (diazepam), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (like isocarboxazid and phenelzine), and anticholinergic medications (e.g., atropine and scopolamine).

Overdose and Missed Dose:

  • An overdose of this medicine may result in symptoms such as extreme drowsiness, dry mouth, dilated pupils, and flushing of the skin. If you observe these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

  • If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double your dose to make up for a missed one.

Management of Side Effects:

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve upon discontinuation of this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

  • If you experience drowsiness or sedation after taking this medication, try taking it at bedtime to help minimise these effects.

  • Drinking plenty of water may help to alleviate dry mouth. Additionally, sucking on sugarless candy or ice chips may help to keep your mouth moist.

  • If you experience constipation, increasing your intake of fibre and water may help.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery:

  • This medication may affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. If you feel dizzy or drowsy after taking Pheniramine, you should avoid these activities until the effects wear off.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation:

  • Pheniramine should only be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding if your doctor determines that the benefits outweigh the risks. Always consult your doctor before taking any medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions:

  • If you have a history of asthma, glaucoma, enlarged prostate, or urinary retention, you should exercise caution when taking Pheniramine as it may worsen these conditions. Inform your doctor of any existing medical conditions before starting a new medication.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations:

  • It is crucial to understand the allergic trigger (pollen, furs, or food). You can undertake an allergy test as well. Avoid these triggers to stay healthy.

  • Have a diet rich in vitamin C, and incorporate a healthy portion of fresh fruits and vegetables with every meal.

Frequently asked questions
