Imipramine

Uses of Imipramine

  • Imipramine is chiefly utilised to manage depression and belongs to the group of tricyclic antidepressants.

  • Additionally, it is also used in children for the management of bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis).

Side effects of Imipramine

  • Dry mouth

  • Blurred vision

  • Constipation

  • Drowsiness

  • Weight gain

How Imipramine works

  • Imipramine is a member of the therapeutic category known as tricyclic antidepressants.

  • It inhibits the reuptake of two neurotransmitters in the brain, serotonin and norepinephrine. This leads to increased levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain, which improves mood and helps alleviate symptoms of depression. Additionally, Imipramine exhibits anticholinergic properties, which are thought to assist in managing bedwetting in children. This is achieved by reducing bladder contractility and increasing bladder capacity, thereby reducing the frequency of bedwetting episodes.
