Contraindications

• Tolterodine should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to tolterodine or to any of the other ingredients. It is also contraindicated in patients with urinary retention, gastric retention, uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, and severe liver impairment.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Tolterodine may interact with anticholinergic medications (such as oxybutynin and solifenacin), antibiotics that inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes (such as erythromycin and clarithromycin), as well as antibiotics that induce CYP3A4 enzymes (like rifampin).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of tolterodine may lead to severe side effects like blurred vision, difficulty urinating, and fast heartbeat. If you observe these symptoms, inform your doctor immediately.

• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double up doses to make up for the missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing Tolterodine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• For managing dry mouth, try sipping water frequently.

• If you have constipation, increase your intake of fibre and fluids.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Tolterodine may cause drowsiness or blurred vision. If you experience these side effects, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you are sure this medicine does not impair your ability to carry out these activities safely.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Tolterodine should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Caution should be exercised when administered to nursing mothers.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with moderate to severe liver impairment or decreased kidney function should exercise caution when using tolterodine.

• Individuals with a condition known as myasthenia gravis should also use this medication with caution.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

• It may help to avoid caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, and cola as they can aggravate your symptoms.

• Aim to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day (unless the doctor advises otherwise).

• Training your bladder can help manage the symptoms of an overactive bladder. This involves gradually extending the time between visits to the toilet.
