Uses of Sunitinib

  • Sunitinib is a medicine primarily used for managing kidney cancer, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, and gastrointestinal stromal tumours. It belongs to the group of medicine known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

  • Besides, it is also used for conditions like relapsed renal cell carcinoma, recurrent chordoma, soft tissue sarcoma, thyroid carcinoma, and thymic carcinoma.

How Sunitinib works

  • Sunitinib is classified as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor.

  • It works by blocking certain proteins known as tyrosine kinases that play a crucial role in the growth and spread of cancer cells. Blocking these proteins can slow down or stop the development of tumours.

  • Sunitinib also inhibits new blood vessel formation which the tumours need for their growth. This further stops the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body.

  • An overdose of Sunitinib may cause severe side effects such as liver toxicity or congestive heart failure. If an overdose is suspected, consult your doctor immediately.

  • If you miss a dose of Sunitinib, take it as soon as you remember unless it is less than 12 hours until your next dose. Do not double-dose to compensate for the missed one.
