Sorafenib

Uses of Sorafenib

  • Sorafenib is primarily used to manage advanced kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma), liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) that cannot be treated with surgery, and thyroid cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It belongs to the class of medications known as kinase inhibitors.

Side effects of Sorafenib

  • Skin rash, dryness, and itching

  • Hand-foot skin reaction

  • Diarrhoea

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Hair loss (Alopecia)

How Sorafenib works

  • Sorafenib is a kinase inhibitor.

  • It functions by blocking the activities of abnormal proteins that signal cancer cells to multiply. This blockade helps to prevent the cancer from spreading. Specifically, it inhibits multiple intracellular and surface kinases, which play crucial parts in cancer cell signalling, angiogenesis (the process of new blood vessel formation), and apoptosis (the process of programmed cell death).
