Selexipag

Uses of Selexipag

  • The primary use of Selexipag is in managing PAH in adults. This medication belongs to the group of selective non-prostanoid IP prostacyclin receptor agonists.

Side effects of Selexipag

  • Headache

  • Diarrhoea

  • Jaw pain

  • Nausea

  • Flushes

How Selexipag works

  • Selexipag is a selective non-prostanoid IP prostacyclin receptor agonist.

  • It acts by selectively activating the IP prostacyclin receptor. This leads to the widening of the pulmonary arteries, a process known as vasodilation.

  • In addition, it also inhibits the growth of vascular smooth muscle cells. Both these actions together help in reducing the high pressure in the pulmonary arteries seen in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

  • Furthermore, Selexipag is transformed into an active metabolite inside the body by an enzyme called carboxylesterase 1. This metabolite brings about similar beneficial effects, thereby boosting Selexipag's overall effectiveness in managing PAH.
