Ropivacaine

Uses of Ropivacaine

  • Ropivacaine is primarily used to provide regional pain control and numb specific areas of the body. It belongs to the class of local anaesthetics.

  • Other uses include epidural anaesthesia for surgery and acute pain management in children and adults. It's also used for peripheral nerve blocks and postoperative pain control.

Side effects of Ropivacaine

  • Hypotension

  • Bradycardia

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Fever

How Ropivacaine works

  • Ropivacaine is a local anaesthetic belonging to the amino amide class.

  • It works by temporarily blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in the nerve cell membrane. By doing so, it prevents nerve impulses from being generated and conducted. This blockage results in the inhibition of sensory and motor function, causing specific areas of the body to become numb and pain-free. Interestingly, Ropivacaine has a longer duration of sensory block compared to motor block, which means it provides more effective pain control for a longer duration.
