How Rituximab works

  • Rituximab is a cancer medication.

  • It is a monoclonal antibody medicine that works by specifically binding to a protein known as CD20, which is found on the surface of immune system cells called B-cells. Once it attaches itself to the CD20 protein, it sets off certain processes that lead to the destruction of these B-cells. These include. Calling other immune cells to attack and eliminate the B-cells, is a process called Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC). Activating a part of the immune system called the complement system, causes the rupture of the B-cell membrane.
