Quinine

Uses of Quinine

  • The primary use of Quinine is to manage uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It is an antimalarial medication that falls within the category of alkaloids.

Side effects of Quinine

  • Headache

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Tinnitus and hearing loss

  • Visual disturbances

  • Dizziness

How Quinine works

  • Quinine is an antimalarial medicine.

  • It operates by targeting the blood stage of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite's life cycle, particularly its schizont form inside red blood cells. Quinine inhibits the parasite's ability to digest haemoglobin, its main food source, by binding to toxic heme molecules produced during haemoglobin breakdown and preventing their detoxification into hemozoin pigment. This build-up of toxic heme eventually kills the parasites.
