Psoralen

Uses of Psoralen

  • The primary use of psoralen is in the treatment of psoriasis, where it helps reduce symptoms and promote skin healing. It is also effective for conditions like vitiligo, stimulating repigmentation, and for managing severe eczema. It belongs to the photosensitizing medications.

  • Additionally, psoralen is used in the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma as part of photochemotherapy, as well as in other skin disorders such as scleroderma and dermatitis.

Side effects of Psoralen

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • A burning sensation on the skin

How Psoralen works

  • Psoralen is a photosensitizing agent that increases the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet A (UVA) light. When absorbed by skin cells and exposed to UVA light, it becomes activated and interacts with DNA, causing cross-linking that injures the cells. This triggers an inflammatory response, leading to increased melanin production, which darkens the skin. Over time, this results in thickening of the outer skin layer, helping to manage various skin conditions.
