Proparacaine

Uses of Proparacaine

  • The primary use of Proparacaine is to numb the eye and surrounding tissues during eye examinations, procedures, and surgeries. It belongs to the group of local anaesthetics specifically known as the ester group.

  • It is also indicated for certain diagnostic procedures on the eye, such as tonometry, gonioscopy, removal of foreign bodies and sutures from the eye, conjunctival scraping, slit-lamp exams and binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy.

Side effects of Proparacaine

  • Stinging or burning sensation upon instillation

  • Redness or irritation of the eye

  • Blurred vision

  • Photophobia

  • Skin rash, urticaria, angioedema (rare)

How Proparacaine works

  • Proparacaine is a type of local anaesthetic belonging specifically to the ester group.

  • It operates by temporarily and reversibly blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in the membrane of nerve cells. This action inhibits the generation and conduction of nerve impulses, leading to a temporary loss of sensation or anaesthesia. The onset of this anaesthesia is rapid, generally occurring within 30 seconds of administration, and lasts for approximately 10 to 20 minutes.

Expert Advice

Dosage Forms Available

  • Proparacaine is available for use via the topical route in the form of an ophthalmic solution.

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • This medicine is intended for both adults and children. The age range is not specified as it is dependent on the procedure or condition that requires the use of Proparacaine.

Contraindications

  • Proparacaine is contraindicated for individuals who have a known hypersensitivity to this medicine or to any of its components.

  • It is also contraindicated for individuals with infections or abrasions of the cornea or conjunctiva.

Other Medications to Avoid

  • There are no specific medications that need to be avoided when using Proparacaine. However, caution should be exercised when using other agents that can increase the risk of corneal injury, such as topical Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) (diclofenac and ibuprofen), aminoglycosides (neomycin), and corticosteroids (prednisolone).

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • Overdose of topical Proparacaine is unlikely as it is to be used under medical supervision. However, overdosage may result in severe corneal damage. However, due to minimal absorption, systemic toxicity is unlikely.

  • Since Proparacaine is used during specific procedures rather than on a regular dosage schedule, there are no relevant instructions regarding a missed dose.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

  • If you experience a stinging or burning sensation upon application, try closing your eyes for a few minutes after instilling Proparacaine.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

  • After the instillation of Proparacaine, temporary blurred vision may occur. During this time, driving or operating heavy machinery is not advised.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

  • The use of Proparacaine during pregnancy and lactation should be done on the advice of a doctor.

Caution in Other Conditions

  • There are no specific conditions that require caution when using Proparacaine.

Special Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • As Proparacaine is used to manage conditions related to the eye, maintaining good eye health is essential. This can be achieved through a balanced diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which are essential for eye health.

  • Regular breaks from screen time as it can strain your eyes.

  • Regular eye check-ups for early detection of any potential issues.
