Uses of Prasugrel
The primary use of Prasugrel is for the reduction of the risk of heart attack, stroke and other serious cardiovascular problems in certain patients. It belongs to a class of medications known as P2Y12 inhibitors.
It is also indicated for use in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) who are undergoing a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This includes people who have had a recent heart attack or have unstable angina.

How Prasugrel works
Prasugrel is an antiplatelet medication.
It works by irreversibly binding to P2Y12 receptors on the surface of platelets, which are the blood cells that play a significant role in clotting. Blocking these receptors means that Prasugrel successfully prevents platelets from being activated and sticking together. As a result, this "antiplatelet" effect decreases the formation of blood clots inside arteries, stents, and grafts. This mechanism ultimately helps in reducing the risk of blockages that could cause serious cardiovascular problems such as a heart attack or stroke.

Overdose and Missed Dose
An overdose of Prasugrel can lead to serious bleeding complications. If an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought.
If a dose of Prasugrel is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, but the missed dose should be skipped if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Doubling the dose to catch up is not recommended.
Management of Side Effects
Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.
For minor bleeding, applying pressure to the site can help stop the bleeding.
