Piperazine

Uses of Piperazine

  • The primary use of Piperazine is in the management of infections caused by parasitic worms, particularly roundworms (ascariasis), pinworms (enterobiasis), and tapeworms (taeniasis). This medication belongs to the class of anthelmintic medicines.

  • In addition to its use in humans, Piperazine is also used to manage parasitic infections in various animals, including poultry, swine, horses, cattle, and companion animals.

Side effects of Piperazine

  • Vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

How Piperazine works

  • Piperazine is an anthelmintic medicine. It works by acting as a GABA receptor agonist. Essentially, it imitates the function of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of mammals. In parasitic worms, Piperazine binds to and activates GABA receptors, resulting in an influx of chloride ions. This causes hyperpolarisation and flaccid paralysis (complete relaxation) of the worm's body wall muscles.
