It is primarily used to prevent and treat vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) in neonates. Phytomenadione is a synthetic form of a fat-soluble vitamin called Vitamin K1.
It also plays a key role in reversing the effects of anticoagulant medicines like warfarin, and it can manage bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency in conditions like malabsorption syndromes, obstructive jaundice, long-term antibiotic therapy, and nutritional deficiencies.

How Phytomenadione works
Phytomenadione is a synthetic form of a fat-soluble vitamin called Vitamin K1.
It works by acting as a cofactor for an enzyme known as gamma-glutamyl carboxylase. This enzyme, with the assistance of Phytomenadione, modifies several blood coagulation factors and anticoagulant proteins. In simpler language, Phytomenadione allows these proteins to bind calcium ions, which in turn makes them biologically active. This process is vital for normal blood clotting and maintaining the balance between bleeding and clotting in the body. By performing its function, Phytomenadione helps manage conditions related to vitamin K deficiency and counteracts the effects of certain anticoagulant medicines.
