Netilmicin

Uses of Netilmicin

  • Netilmicin is an antibiotic primarily used for managing serious bacterial infections. It belongs to the class of medications known as aminoglycosides.

  • Secondary uses of this medicine include the management of respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, septicemia, bone and joint infections, gynaecological infections, and bacterial meningitis.

Side effects of Netilmicin

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Headaches

  • Skin rash or itching

  • Pain and inflammation at the injection site

How Netilmicin works

  • Netilmicin is a member of the aminoglycoside antibiotics class.

  • It operates by irreversibly attaching to specific receptors on the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria. This hinders the initiation complex between messenger RNA and the 30S subunit, leading to misinterpretation of the genetic code on the messenger RNA template. The result is an inhibition of protein synthesis, thereby terminating bacterial cell growth and replication. This causes the bacteria to die, effectively eliminating the infection in your body.
