Mexiletine

Uses of Mexiletine

  • The primary use of Mexiletine is to manage ventricular arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats originating in the ventricles of the heart). It belongs to the class of medications known as class 1B antiarrhythmic agents.

  • Besides managing ventricular arrhythmias, Mexiletine is also used for managing chronic pain, especially in cases of peripheral neuropathy. It has applications in managing myotonic dystrophy to relieve muscle pain and severe myotonia (muscle stiffness and difficulty relaxing muscles). It can also be used for preventing sudden cardiac death in individuals with a history of serious ventricular arrhythmias.

Side effects of Mexiletine

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Heartburn and diarrhoea

  • Dizziness and tremors

  • Chest pain and palpitations

How Mexiletine works

  • Mexiletine is a class 1B antiarrhythmic agent.

  • This medicine primarily works by blocking the sodium channels in heart muscle cells. By doing this, it slows down the electrical impulses that cause the heart muscle to contract.
