Dosage Forms Available

• There's also a transdermal patch version of Methylphenidate that can be applied directly to the skin.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• This medicine is primarily meant for children and adolescents who are diagnosed with ADHD. The age range typically starts from 6 years onwards.

Contraindications

• Methylphenidate is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the medicine or any of its components.

• It is also contraindicated for individuals with glaucoma, active agitation or anxiety, and tics or a family history of Tourette's syndrome.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Methylphenidate may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (such as isocarboxazid and phenelzine), antidepressants (like fluoxetine and sertraline), blood pressure medications (such as metoprolol and lisinopril), anticonvulsants (like carbamazepine and phenytoin) and anticoagulants (like warfarin).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Methylphenidate may lead to symptoms like agitation, confusion, hallucinations, sweating, flushing, muscle twitching, seizures, rapid heartbeat, and high blood pressure. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an overdose.

• If you miss a dose of Methylphenidate, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless, resolving once the medicine is discontinued. However, if severe side effects or symptom worsening occur, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of water can help manage dry mouth.

• Eating small, frequent meals might minimise stomach pain.

• Practising good sleep hygiene may improve insomnia.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Methylphenidate may cause dizziness or drowsiness in some individuals. If this happens, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until these effects subside.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The use of Methylphenidate during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended unless expressly advised by your doctor. Always consult your doctor before starting this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with pre-existing heart conditions or a family history of sudden cardiac death should exercise caution when taking Methylphenidate.

• This medicine should also be used carefully in patients with psychiatric disorders, seizure disorders or tics.

• Adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can support overall health and well-being when managing conditions like ADHD.

• Regular physical activity can help mitigate symptoms of ADHD by improving concentration and mood.

• Ensure adequate sleep, as sleep deprivation can exacerbate ADHD symptoms.

• Regular practice of mindfulness or meditation activities could be beneficial in managing symptoms associated with ADHD.
