Lubiprostone

Uses of Lubiprostone

  • Lubiprostone is primarily used for the management of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC), irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in women, and opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic non-cancer pain. It is part of the class of medicines known as chloride channel activators.

Side effects of Lubiprostone

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhoea

  • Headache

  • Abdominal pain

  • Dizziness

How Lubiprostone works

  • Lubiprostone is a chloride channel activator. It works by opening specific chloride channels, known as ClC-2, on the cells lining your intestines. This action allows chloride ions to move into the gut, pulling in sodium and water along with them. The increase in water content in the gut helps to soften stools, making them easier to pass, thereby relieving constipation.
