Loxapine

Uses of Loxapine

  • The primary use of Loxapine is in the management of schizophrenia and belongs to the class of typical antipsychotics.

  • It also helps manage both positive symptoms (like hallucinations and delusions) and negative symptoms (like apathy and social withdrawal) associated with schizophrenia. In some cases, Loxapine may be used to control agitation, aggression, and psychotic symptoms during manic episodes in bipolar disorder.

Side effects of Loxapine

  • Dry mouth

  • Drowsiness and sedation

  • Dizziness

  • Constipation

  • Blurred vision

How Loxapine works

  • Loxapine is a typical antipsychotic medication.

  • It works mainly by blocking the action of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate mood and perception. When dopamine activity is too high, it can cause symptoms of schizophrenia and other mental health disorders. Loxapine reduces this excessive dopamine activity by blocking the D2 receptors in the brain to which dopamine usually attaches.
