Lapatinib

Uses of Lapatinib

  • Lapatinib is used in managing advanced or metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer that has not responded adequately to other treatments. It belongs to the tyrosine kinase inhibitors group of medicines.

  • Lapatinib is also used in combination with another medication called capecitabine.

Side effects of Lapatinib

  • Diarrhoea

  • Nausea

  • Rash

  • Fatigue

How Lapatinib works

  • Lapatinib is a member of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors therapeutic category.

  • It works by specifically blocking the action of two proteins, EGFR and HER2, which are often found on certain cancer cells. These proteins generally send signals that tell the cells to divide and grow. By blocking these signals, Lapatinib effectively slows down or even stops the growth and spread of the cancer cells.

This mechanism makes Lapatinib an effective medication used in managing certain types of advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
