  • Apart from the primary use, Imeglimin can be used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to further enhance the management regime of T2DM.

  • Diarrhoea

How Imeglimin works

  • Imeglimin is a novel oral antidiabetic medication.

  • It works by improving the regulation of sugar in the body through multiple mechanisms. Firstly, it increases the amount of insulin released by the pancreas when sugar levels are high. Insulin is a hormone that helps cells absorb sugar from the blood, thereby lowering blood sugar levels. Secondly, Imeglimin improves the body's sensitivity to insulin, particularly in the liver and muscles. This means that these organs respond more effectively to insulin, further reducing blood sugar levels. Lastly, it targets mitochondria, which are the energy-producing components of cells. By enhancing their function and decreasing harmful oxidative stress, Imeglimin protects insulin-producing cells from damage caused by high sugar levels in the body.

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • Imeglimin is indicated for use in adults aged 18 and above.

Contraindications

  • Imeglimin is contraindicated in patients with severe liver or kidney disease. It should not be used by patients with a known hypersensitivity to Imeglimin or any of its components. Patients with metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis, should avoid using this medicine.

Other Medications to Avoid

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • If an overdose of Imeglimin occurs, general supportive measures should be employed, and symptomatic treatment should be given. Hemodialysis may be beneficial due to the medicine's low plasma protein binding.

  • If a dose of Imeglimin is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped. Double dosage should be avoided.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

  • Drinking plenty of water might help manage gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

  • If you experience headaches after taking Imeglimin, try to rest and relax. A hot or cold compress may also help relieve the discomfort.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

  • It should only be used if the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the fetus. Nursing mothers should thus exercise caution and consult a doctor before using this medicine.

Caution in Other Conditions

  • Patients with impaired liver or kidney function should exercise caution when taking Imeglimin. Regular monitoring of renal function is advised before and during treatment with this medicine.
