How Fosaprepitant works

It works by being converted into its active form, aprepitant, in the body. Aprepitant blocks the action of a substance called substance P. Substance P is a chemical messenger in the brain that plays a key role in triggering nausea and vomiting. By blocking substance P, Fosaprepitant helps to prevent the feelings of nausea and vomiting often associated with chemotherapy treatments. In this way, it helps manage nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing highly emetogenic (highly likely to cause vomiting) or moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy.

It should not be used by patients who are currently taking pimozide due to potential increases in plasma concentrations of pimozide, which could lead to serious or life-threatening reactions.
