Dosage Forms Available

• Fluphenazine can be taken orally (tablet, liquid (elixir and concentrate)), and intramuscular (infusion) routes.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• This medicine is meant for adults.

Contraindications

• Fluphenazine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Fluphenazine or other phenothiazines.

• It is also contraindicated in patients with comatose states, severe central nervous system depression, blood dyscrasias or bone marrow suppression.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Fluphenazine may interact with other antipsychotics and neuroleptics (eg., haloperidol, pimozide), antidepressants (eg., amitriptyline, imipramine ) SSRIs (eg., fluoxetine, escitalopram), anticonvulsants and barbiturates (eg., carbamazepine, phenobarbital)and anticholinergic agents (eg., atropine, benztropine).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Fluphenazine may cause severe drowsiness, loss of consciousness, high body temperature, irregular heartbeat or seizures. If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor immediately.

• If you miss a dose of Fluphenazine, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the scheduled time. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve after discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• Drinking plenty of water could help to manage the side effects of dry mouth.

• Standing up slowly from a seated or lying position can help manage dizziness and lightheadedness.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• This medicine can affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machines. Avoid these activities if you experience drowsiness, sedation or impaired concentration after taking this medicine.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Fluphenazine should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is not recommended for use during breastfeeding as it can pass into breast milk and may affect the nursing infant. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy or lactation.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with a history of seizures or epilepsy, cardiovascular diseases, liver or kidney impairment, glaucoma, urinary retention or Parkinson's disease should exercise caution when taking Fluphenazine.

• Elderly patients with dementia are also advised to exercise caution due to an increased risk of mortality.
