Uses of Ertapenem
Ertapenem is primarily used to manage serious bacterial infections in adults and children. It belongs to the class of carbapenem antibiotics.
It is also used to manage complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections, community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections, acute pelvic infections and post-surgical gynecologic infections.

How Ertapenem works
Ertapenem is a carbapenem antibiotic.
It fights off bacteria by stopping them from making their cell walls. The process involves hooking onto proteins called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the bacteria's surfaces. By doing so, Ertapenem disrupts the final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis, which causes the bacteria to die, thus helping to manage the infection. This medicine is effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including those thriving in aerobic and anaerobic environments.
