Eptifibatide

Uses of Eptifibatide

  • Eptifibatide is primarily used to reduce the risk of heart attacks and other serious cardiovascular events in certain high-risk patients. It falls under the category of anti-platelet medications, specifically glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors.

  • Additionally, it is used in cases of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) to lower the death rate or risk of new myocardial infarctions, as well as in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) to prevent platelet aggregation.

Side effects of Eptifibatide

  • Bleeding complications

  • Low blood pressure

  • Low platelet count

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Irregular heartbeat

How Eptifibatide works

  • Eptifibatide is an anti-platelet medicine.

  • It works by blocking glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptors on platelets, preventing fibrinogen and other substances from causing clots. This reduces the risk of heart attacks or strokes by stopping platelets from sticking together. The effect is reversible, so platelet function normalizes after discontinuation of the medication.
