Epoetin Alfa

Uses of Epoetin Alfa

  • The primary use of Epoetin Alfa is to manage anaemia caused by chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy, or zidovudine therapy for HIV patients. It is a recombinant form of human erythropoietin, which belongs to the class of ESAs.

  • Additionally, it is also used to reduce the need for allogeneic red blood cell transfusions in patients undergoing elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery.

Side effects of Epoetin Alfa

  • Hypertension

  • Headache

  • Joint pain

  • Nausea

  • Swelling due to fluid retention

How Epoetin Alfa works

  • Epoetin Alfa is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA).

  • It works by stimulating the bone marrow (soft tissue inside the bones which produces red blood cells) to produce more red blood cells. This helps manage anaemia caused by kidney disease, cancer chemotherapy, or zidovudine treatment in HIV.
