  • Mild headache

  • Fever

  • Peripheral oedema

How Enoxaparin works

  • Enoxaparin is an anticoagulant medication.

  • It works by increasing the action of antithrombin III, a protein in your body that naturally thins your blood. By doing this, enoxaparin helps to stop blood clots from forming or getting bigger. It does this by blocking the function of two specific clotting factors, called Xa and IIa (thrombin). Clotting factors are proteins that help your blood to clot. By blocking these factors, enoxaparin helps to prevent harmful blood clots from forming and growing in your blood vessels.

Expert Advice

Dosage Forms Available

  • Enoxaparin is administered as an injection. The injection is given under the skin, which is a method known as subcutaneous injection.

Age And Dose Restrictions

  • Enoxaparin is usually prescribed for adults. It is not generally recommended for use in children unless specifically instructed by a doctor. The dose of enoxaparin depends on your weight and the health of your kidneys.

Contraindications

  • Enoxaparin is contraindicated in patients with conditions like active bleeding, thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

  • This medication can interact with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen), antiplatelet agents (e.g., clopidogrel), and anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, heparin).

  • Before starting any prescription or over-the-counter medications, it's crucial to consult a doctor.

Overdose And Missed Dose

  • If you take too much enoxaparin, it can lead to too much bleeding. If this happens, you should contact your doctor immediately.

  • If you forget to take your dose of enoxaparin, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your usual dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Management Of Side Effects

  • Most side effects of enoxaparin are temporary and get better on their own once you stop taking the medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or if any of your symptoms get worse, you should consult your doctor.

  • Drinking plenty of water can help manage common side effects like headaches and fever.

  • Injection site reactions like redness, pain and bruising may be managed by varying the injection site with each administration.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

  • Enoxaparin does not generally affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you feel unwell after taking enoxaparin, avoid driving or operating machinery until you feel better.

Use In Pregnancy And Lactation

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should only use enoxaparin if your doctor believes the benefits outweigh the risks. Always consult your doctor before using any medicine when pregnant or breastfeeding.

Caution In Other Conditions

  • If you have kidney problems or uncontrolled high blood pressure, you should use enoxaparin with caution. You should also be cautious if you have a history of stomach ulcers that bleed or diabetic eye disease.

Special Dietary And Lifestyle Recommendation

  • It's important to eat a balanced diet and maintain a healthy lifestyle to manage your overall health and well-being.
