Docetaxel

Uses of Docetaxel

  • The primary use of Docetaxel is for managing various types of cancer including breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, prostate cancer, gastric adenocarcinoma, and head and neck cancer. It belongs to the class of chemotherapy medications known as taxanes.

  • It is also used in combination with other medicines such as doxorubicin, cisplatin, fluorouracil, and cyclophosphamide for treating different stages of cancer.

Side effects of Docetaxel

  • Hair loss

  • Mouth ulcers

  • Diarrhoea

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Fatigue

How Docetaxel works

  • Docetaxel is a chemotherapy medication falling under the category of taxanes.

  • It operates by promoting the assembly and stabilising microtubules, which are structures inside cells that help them maintain their shape and enable cell division. By enhancing microtubule formation and hindering their disassembly, Docetaxel interferes with the normal cell cycle. This interference leads to cell death, particularly in rapidly dividing cancer cells. Hence, it effectively manages various types of cancer by stopping their growth and spread.
