Difluprednate

Uses of Difluprednate

  • Difluprednate is primarily used for the management of postoperative inflammation and pain following ocular surgery and it belongs to the class of topical corticosteroids.

  • It is also indicated for managing ocular inflammatory conditions such as anterior uveitis, panuveitis, and endogenous uveitis. Additionally, it is used off-label for managing ocular surface and anterior segment inflammatory disorders like allergic conjunctivitis, episcleritis, scleritis, and keratitis.

Side effects of Difluprednate

  • Swelling of the cornea

  • Eye pain

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Redness of the eye's surface

  • Cloudiness or haze in the front part of the eye

How Difluprednate works

  • Difluprednate is a corticosteroid.

  • It works by binding to specific glucocorticoid receptors inside cells. This binding forms a complex that moves into the cell's nucleus, where it influences the activity of certain genes, resulting in less inflammation. Specifically, Difluprednate prevents an enzyme called phospholipase A2 from working effectively, leading to reduced production of chemicals that cause inflammation, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Additionally, it stabilises cell membranes, lessens the leakiness of tiny blood vessels (capillaries), and suppresses immune responses. All these actions further help to reduce inflammation and manage conditions related to eye inflammation.
