How Danazol works
Danazol is a synthetic steroid medication.
It has multiple effects on hormones in the body. It hinders the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. These two hormones are essential for the normal menstrual cycle and ovulation. Danazol also directly impedes the production of steroids in the ovaries and endometrial tissue, reducing the production of oestrogen and progestin - female hormones that stimulate the growth of endometrial tissue. Additionally, it enhances the levels of free testosterone, a male hormone, and attaches itself to androgen, progesterone, and glucocorticoid receptors. All these actions together create an environment in the body that has low levels of female hormones (oestrogens) and slightly increased levels of male hormones (androgens). This helps control conditions like endometriosis, fibrocystic breast disease, menorrhagia, and hereditary angioedema.
