Contraindications

• Canagliflozin is contraindicated in individuals with severe renal impairment, defined as eGFR less than 30 mL/min/1.73 m².

• It is also contraindicated for people with end-stage renal disease or requiring dialysis, and those with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Other Medications to Avoid

• Canagliflozin may interact with diuretics (such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), insulin and insulin secretagogues (like glipizide, glyburide), blood thinners (such as warfarin, heparin) and antimycobacterials (such as isoniazid, rifampin).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• Overdosing on Canagliflozin can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, general weakness or tiredness. If an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought.

• In case a dose of Canagliflozin is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it is close to the time for the next dose, the missed one should be skipped. A double dose should never be taken to compensate for the missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve after discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor. To manage the side effects:

• Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated

• Adjust the timing of medication if it causes stomach upset

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Canagliflozin may occasionally cause dizziness or light-headedness. If you experience these side effects, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• Canagliflozin is not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless considered necessary by a doctor. It is always advisable to consult a doctor before using this medicine during these phases.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Caution is advised while using Canagliflozin in patients with a history of lower limb amputations or peripheral artery disease, as these conditions might increase the risk of amputation.
