How Artesunate works

  • Artesunate is an antimalarial medication.

  • It contains an endoperoxide bridge structure that plays a fundamental role in its action against malaria. This structure assists in releasing free radicals that attach to and damage specific proteins in the malaria parasites, mainly the sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA). This damage disrupts the metabolic functions of the parasite, especially during its trophozoite and schizont stages, leading to the ultimate death of the parasite.
