Uses of Artemether + Lumefantrine
Artemether + Lumefantrine is primarily used to manage acute uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum or mixed infections including P. falciparum in adults and children weighing 5 kg or more, and it belongs to the group of antimalarial medicines.
In addition, it can also be used to treat uncomplicated malaria due to other Plasmodium species, if the first-line treatment for that species is ineffective or unavailable.

How Artemether + Lumefantrine works
Artemether is a semisynthetic derivative of artemisinin. It quickly reduces the number of malaria parasites during the initial stages of infection by producing reactive substances that damage the membranes and internal structures of the parasites.
Lumefantrine is a synthetic antimalarial agent. It works by halting the growth of any remaining parasites and preventing them from coming back. It does this by interfering with their ability to create nucleic acids and proteins, which are vital for their survival and reproduction.

Contraindications
- Artemether + Lumefantrine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to either artemether, lumefantrine or any excipients in the formulation. It should not be used in patients with severe malaria, or in those with a family history of congenital QT prolongation or sudden death.

- Artemether + Lumefantrine may interact with CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as ketoconazole and macrolide antibiotics), CYP3A4 inducers (such as rifampin and carbamazepine), medicines that prolong the QT interval (e.g., antiarrhythmics, tricyclic antidepressants, certain antimicrobials), hormonal contraceptives and antiretrovirals (lopinavir/ritonavir).
Overdose and Missed Dose
- An overdose of Artemether + Lumefantrine may lead to symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, palpitations, and QT prolongation. If you observe these symptoms, immediately contact your doctor.
- If you miss a dose of Artemether + Lumefantrine, take it as soon as you remember. However, avoid doubling up on the dose if it is nearly time for the next one.
Management of Side Effects
