How Aripiprazole works

  • Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic medication.

  • It functions as a partial dopamine agonist. This means it attaches to dopamine receptors in the brain, stimulating them just enough to reduce excessive dopamine activity associated with mental health disorders. Additionally, this medicine also blocks certain types of serotonin receptors while partially activating others. Serotonin is another neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation and mental balance. By controlling both dopamine and serotonin activity, it helps stabilise the brain's chemical environment. Its unique receptor-binding properties lead to different effects in different conditions. For instance, in schizophrenia, it helps reduce hallucinations and delusions, while in disorders like bipolar disorder and depression, it acts on mood, agitation and motivation.
